DIVE BLOG

Last week we made the trek down to Bremer Bay to dive with the Mystical Leafy Seadragon's. One of our most memorable dive experiences to date… Who doesn't love a good Roadtrip?! Especially when there is the potential to find such an amazing creature @ the destination. It's best to leave early so you can relax on the way down, check in to your accomodation, check in with Craig & Ann @ bremerbaydive.com the dive shop to go over weather conditions & dive plans for your stay. Maybe even get in a sneaky afternoon or night dive in as you arrive ;) Depending on where you are leaving from, Bremer Bay is a comfortable 6 hour drive south east of Perth, around 600kms. Craig’s boat had just gotten back from repair in Perth as we arrived so we had some fun helping him pump it up & refit it before we could dive. Craig is an absolute legend & Dragon whisperer & definitely your first point of reference for any Leafy Seadragon adventure in Bremer Bay… This season they have stayed out deep so a boat is needed to dive with them. This particular Dragon (Queen D) is the most perfect we have seen to date! With no missing parts, a small topknot that most of the Bremer Bay population lack & she actually seemed to not mind our company at all :) Leafy Seadragon's scientifically known as Phycodurus eques(Gunther,1865) are endemic to the southern coast of Australia. They have been sighted as far north as Lancelin on the West coast & Wilsons Promontory on the East coast. Growing up to 430mm in length, their preferred habitat is seagrass or exposed reef from 4-30m depth. They are the most breathtakingly beautiful creature to dive with, as challenging as they may be to capture the ultimate image of, the challenge is what keeps it interesting. As with their smaller cousins they are constantly turning away from the camera. If only I could tell them I just want to make them famous :) There are a range of accomodations to suit all from the Resort bremerbayresort.com.au which has nice big rooms that accomodate up to 3 adults with plenty of space for your dive and camera equipment. I usually get the best price from wotif.com. To airbnb.com.au there are a range of holiday houses & Bed & Breakfast style accomodations in the area. Then there are also several camping grounds that offer everything from unpowered camp sites to room’s with private ensuite. The Resort serves Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner daily & The Wellstead Museum Cafe wellsteadmuseum.com.au opens daily from 10-4 & 10-1930 Saturday. Take plenty food & drinks so you can self cater, especially if you plan to night dive. Fresh fruit & vegetables, as with any remote location what is available in the shop is generally not super fresh or exciting. No trip to Bremer would be complete without a visit to the Giant Mermaid in the carpark of the Bremer Bay Resort or Stunning Main Beach for that matter. We hope to get back in with these truly stunning creations very soon.
Hopefully next trip we get time to do the Orca trip with whalewatchwesternaustralia.com…… |
